Kuapa Kokoo Farmers Union (KKFU) last Friday May 15th 2010 showcased a semblance of what set us apart from its peers when it held a mini-durbar at Pokukrom a village in the Central Region of Ghana and distributed over 50,000 cutlasses to farmer members of the Union. The colourful and well attended programme which was largely patronised by farmers, chiefs and people of the village, saw almost all the top executives of KKFU in attendance. The unique position KKFU represent and the difference the Union is making both in the cocoa marketing industry and the positive impact it is making in the lives of its members was really manifested both in deed and expression. Kuapa not only boast of being the marketing company that supplies cutlasses to farmers, but also pride itself as a community focused co-operative that undertakes projects beneficial to its operational communities.
Kuapa is able to do all this and more with the premiums paid by Divine Chocolate UK. Giving the background to the distribution of the cutlasses, KKFU President-Mr P.C.K. Buah noted that even though Kuapa supplies cutlasses every year to its members, this is the second time in the annals of the Union that it is being launched and Pokukrom happens to host the event. He cautioned the farmers that the cutlasses are meant to be used in their various farms but not to be sold. He said any member found selling the cutlasses would be sanctioned. Madam Comfort Kumeah the chairperson of Kuapa Kokoo Farmers Trust (KKFT) who gave an overview of KKFT activities catalogued a lot of projects undertaken by Kuapa in partnership with Fairtrade. She mentioned some of the projects previously undertaken as provision of boreholes, Toilets and Education facilities. Mad. Kumeah revealed that the Board and Management of KKFU have earmarked 90,000 cedis for 14 different projects to be spread across Kuapa communities this year. In his welcome address, the chief of Pokukrom Nana Adu Gyamfi himself a farmer, was grateful KKFU for chosen his village to play host to such a historic event. He asked his people to sell their cocoa to Kuapa. He pledged that though he is not a member of KKFU, he would sell most of his cocoa to the Union from now onwards. |
