His Excellency, Dr. Nicholas Westcott – the British High Commissioner to Ghana on the 5th of May 2010 visited the offices of Kuapa Kokoo in Asokwa, Kumasi. It was his second visit in three years. The High Commissioner was received by some members of the National Executive Council headed by the President, Mr. P C K Buah and the Management of Kuapa Kokoo. Discussions centred mainly on progress made by the Union since 2008.  The Envoy was briefed on growth experienced by Kuapa Kokoo since 2008. Management explained that the Union has seen growth in membership and Fairtrade sales since his last visit. Kuapa Kokoo today can boast of a membership of well over 50,000. Management however explained that there are plans to put a ceiling on the number since it is becoming more difficult to satisfy all members. Also, Cadbury is sourcing Fairtrade cocoa beans from Kuapa while turning 20% of Diary Milk Chocolate to Fairtrade. Dr. Westcott enquired if the takeover of Cadbury’s by KRAFT has impact negatively on the fortunes of the Union. Management expressed the hope that the take over would not impact negatively on the fortune of the Union but rather lead to an improved and healthy relationship that is mutually beneficial to both partners.
Dr. Nicholas Westcott was full of praise for the Union and urged them to continue working hard to better the lot of the ordinary farmer. The Union later presented some Kuapa souvenirs to the High Commissioner. |
